The colour chart

Nine kinds of job, each with its own colour

On the wall above the beach every house was painted its own colour, so a sailor could pick out his own door from the sea. The services here work the same way: each has its colour, and you will see it again on its page.

Two towns in one

The walled town by the river, and La Cala at the other end

La Vila Joiosa is not one place for a locksmith but several. The old town on its promontory above the mouth of the Amadorio is a protected historic centre of painted houses, narrow streets and steps. About twenty of those streets form a restricted-access zone whose entrances check number plates and let in authorised vehicles only, so the van stays outside and the locksmith walks in with the tools. How that works, and what happens to an old wooden door, is on the page for the old town.

At the eastern end of the municipality, La Cala is the second-largest part of the town: towers and complexes with pools, many of them let to visitors. In between are the 19th-century streets along Colón and Cervantes, the estates the fishermen’s guild built by the port, and inland, more than thirty farming partidas between the Amadorio and the Torres. The call-out area lists them all, with what to say on the phone so the door is found.

Holiday flats are a large part of the town. In June 2024 La Vila had 1,782 registered tourist dwellings with 7,830 beds. If you host or manage some of them, see the locksmith service for hosts and managers.

Terms that come with every job

There are no customer reviews on this site, and none have been written for it: the reviews page explains why. What you can judge instead are the terms every job is done on:

  • The price is agreed at the door, once the lock has been seen, and before any work starts.
  • Opening without damage comes first. The drill is used only when nothing else works, and only once you have said yes.
  • An honest estimate of the journey when you ring, rather than a promise of minutes.
  • Proof that you live there is asked for before a door is opened: it protects you as much as anyone.
  • Keys are never cut or copied, and car keys are never made or programmed. Cars are opened, nothing more.

Who answers, and how the work is done, is on the about page. Pay by cash, card or Bizum. Not urgent? Ask for a written quote through the contact page.

Guides from the town

Before you ring: guides written for La Vila

  • A lockout up the Amadorio valley

Shut out of a village house in Orxeta, Sella or Relleu, after dark, with the coast a long way down the road. How to be found, what to expect from the drive, and where to wait.

  • A tourist flat in a community block

Letting a flat to visitors in a building where everyone else lives all year? The street door, the lift, the bins and your own front door are where neighbours notice first.

  • An elderly parent living alone in the old town

A parent in a painted house up a steep street, and you a flight away. What to set up now, so that a lost key, a door that will not open from inside or a fall is a phone call rather than a crisis.

All eight are in the guides, from a lockout in the old town’s camera zone to a lockout up the Amadorio valley.

Asked on the phone

Questions people ask before the first call

Do you speak English on the phone?

Yes. Calls, WhatsApp messages and emails are answered in English or Spanish, whichever you prefer, and the price is explained in the same language before any work starts.

Can you make me a copy of my key while you are here?

No. This business does not cut, copy or supply keys of any kind, for houses or for cars. The work is opening doors, cars and safes, and changing, repairing and upgrading locks. When a new cylinder is fitted, it comes from the manufacturer with its own set of keys.

Is La Vila Joiosa the same place as Villajoyosa?

Yes. La Vila Joiosa is the official Valencian name and Villajoyosa the Spanish one; maps, letters and people use both. Either name in your address is fine.

Which ways of paying do you take?

By cash, card or Bizum. The price is agreed with you at the door, once the lock has been seen and before the work starts.

I live in La Cala. Is that Villajoyosa or Finestrat?

La Cala de Villajoyosa runs straight into La Cala de Finestrat, and plenty of residents are not sure which side of the line they live on. Both are covered, so it makes no difference to the call-out.

Somewhere between the painted houses and La Cala?

Ring, or send a photo of the lock and your location on WhatsApp. Or write to us from the contact page if it can wait.
